Hepatitis A, B, and C… Know the Difference



Signs and Symptoms

  • Fatigue/tiredness

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea

  • Jaundice; yellowing of skin/eyes

  • Abdominal Pain

  • Vomiting (A & B only)

  • Dark Urine (A & B only)

  • Fever (A Only; usually not B)

  • Clay-colored stools (A only)

  • Joint pain (A only)


  • Vaccination (A & B only)

  • Hepatitis A

    • Good hygiene

      • Hand washing

    • Be careful with food handling/products

    • Contact health care provider immediately if exposed to virus

      • Hepatitis A vaccine or immune globin within 2 weeks of first exposure may prevent infection

    • Hepatitis B

      • Use condoms correctly every time

      • Don’t do drugs!

        • Don’t share needles

      • Don’t share personal care items

      • Choose tattoo artists and piercing providers carefully

        • Make sure they follow hygienic practices

      • Chronic HBV infection treatment available

    • Hepatitis C

      • Avoid activities that may cause exposure to blood

      • Avoid sharing personal care items

      • Use condoms

      • Avoid getting a tattoo/piercing with unsterilized equipment

      • Healthcare Providers

        • Take precautions to avoid needle stick injuries
