Mumps

Symptoms of Mumps:

  1. Fever

  2. Loss of appetite

  3. Swollen/tender salivary glands (under ears and jaw)

  4. Headache

  5. Muscle aches

  6. Tiredness

NOT EVERYONE HAS SYMPTOMS!

Symptoms start 16-18 days after infection and onset can last 12-25 days. Most people recover completely within a few weeks.

 

How does it spread?

  • Water droplets from infected person

    • Cough, sneeze, or talking

  • Sharing utensils and cups

  • Touching surfaces with unwashed hands

Most infectious stage is right before and right after onset.

Prevention:

  1. Get vaccinated

    • 2 dosages

      • First: 12-15 months

      • Second: 4-6 years old

    • Wash hands thoroughly and often

    • Don’t share utensils and cups

Hawaii State Law states that a person with mumps should not be allowed to attend school, work, or travel for 9 days after the start of swollen salivary glands.
